thursday | may 17–june 7 | 2D & 3D EXPLORATIONS IN ARTMAKING: Making Self-Portraits | 1st – 6th graders

Workshops 3:30–5:00 pm
(minimum of 5 students, maximum 10)

Young artists will choose their own focus from a range of materials for this 4-week mini session, working in either 2D or 3D, on a project that zeroes in on the notion of self-portraiture in a very broad sense. We’ll take a look at how many artists before them have created self-portraits in many different ways, from representational to very abstract!

2 workshop intensive | middle schoolers only | MAKING ART + SOCIAL JUSTICE

Two Workshop Intensive: Thursday, 6:00 - 8:00pm, May 20th & May 27th

Introductory workshop for Middle Schoolers only, who are interested in exploring ways to integrate their passion for artmaking with their passion for social justice! We'll explore how to make our voices heard through our own artmaking and learn about the work of other artist-activists. Make art and make a difference!

Who: 6th – 8th graders

wednesdays | may 17–june 7 | SCREEN PRINTING FOR JUSTICE | 3rd – 6th graders

Workshops 3:30–5:00 pm
(minimum of 5 students, maximum 10)

We’ll look at the work of some artists, who are also activists. How do they express their concerns for the world around them through their artwork? What are YOUR concerns about the world around you? We’ll explore the basics of screen printing and each participant will create their own design for a T-shirt that they’ll screen print toward changing the world through one artwork at a time!

BadAss Mom Time in the Garage-Studio!

FREE to first 10 Moms to register.

With Mother’s Day approaching, we are entering the Season of Mom’s and so I’m offering a couple of Fire in the Belly workshops to celebrate our own s-heroism, especially this year, as we have performed Mom-ness X 20 on the scale of Athena, Xena, Mulan, Sheera, Wonder Woman, Hidimba any number of heroic, goddess, super-hero types. We have worked, home-schooled, cooked, comforted, cajoled, volunteered, grieved, tangled with Canvas and geometry and phonics and the details of the Boston Tea Party and essays on Fahrenheit 451 and... and... and... and done more multi-tasking than is humanly possible really.

Come spend 2 hours, playing & making whatever YOU want, using the materials I have in the studio for mixed-media works on paper, printmaking, or 3D pieces using hand tools, screws, nails and glue. I’ll be here to suggest, encourage, demonstrate, offer guidance, support, or teach as needed. Come celebrate your inner Warrior. Come make some art for fun because it’ll nourish you.

We’ll take a look at some of the work of artists from different avante-garde movements of the 20th Century for inspiration!

MAKING 3D MAPS & MINATURES CITIES: Exploring Assemblage & Found Objects | 1st – 6th graders

Workshops 3:30–5:00 pm
(minimum of 5 students, maximum 10)

Using a range of materials including found objects from my collection and those that they collect themselves, young artists will design the layout for and create their own miniature cities in the vein of assemblage. We’ll take a look at some of the work of artists from different avante-garde movements of the 20th Century for inspiration!

PRINTMAKING 3rd grade & up

We’ll explore printmaking including through block printing, collagraphs (using upcycled materials) & monoprints (using upcycled materials). This workshop is great for beginnners and for young artists who may know the basics but want to deepen their exploration of printmaking.

rising 1st – 6th graders | PRINTMAKING & SOCIAL JUSTICE

We’ll look at the work of artists, who are also activists. How do they express their concerns for the world around them through their artwork? What are YOUR concerns about the world around you?

We’ll explore the ways you can make art about your own concerns through making collagraphs, mono prints, and screen prints. By the end of the session, each artist will design and print their own T-shirt about what they care about most!

All workshops take place in my outdoor garage-studio space in the College Hill neighborhood of Maplewood, New Jersey.

rising 1st – 6th graders | BUILDING MINIATURE TREE HOUSES

We’ll look the work of some architects, who have built really amazing tree houses, create our own designs and build our own in miniature using wood, glue, basic hand tools, and an assortment of other materials!

All workshops take place in my outdoor garage-studio space in the College Hill neighborhood of Maplewood, New Jersey.

spring | 8 mondays | march 15 – may 3 | 3:30 – 5:00 pm EXPLORING SOCIAL JUSTICE THROUGH ARTMAKING 3rd grade & up

We’ll explore the relationship between community activism, social justice and the visual arts. We’ll take a look at the work of different artists who’ve used their creativity and artwork to address social issues and causes they believe in. Among them are Faith Ringgold, Eric Gottesman, Shirin Neshat, Keith Haring, Jacob Lawrence, Andrea Bowers, Kara Walker, and El Anatsui. And then we will make work of our own, in part informed by Learning for Justice Curriculum.

All workshops take place in my outdoor garage-studio space in Maplewood, New Jersey.

spring | 8 tuesdays | march 16 – may 3 | 3:30 – 5:00 pm EXPLORING ARTMAKING, 2D & 3D 1st – 3rd graders

We’ll work on several small projects using a range of materials designed to explore both the elements and principles of art & design, through looking at a range of artists, among them Alexander Calder, Louise Nevelson, Roy Lichtenstein, Hokusai, Basquiat, and Frida Kahlo.

Using a range of found objects and other materials, we’ll experiment with making Mobiles, Stabiles, and Miniature Circus elements inspired by Alexander Calder!

rising 1st – 6th graders | EXPLORING CLAY & 3D

Working with air dry clay, we'll explore beadmaking, fantastical creatures, self-portraiture, imitating “nature” and building with armatures.
